Lauren Hoyt LMFT, Trained and Certified Master Clinician of Discernment Counseling
Her Story
With over 25 years of counseling experience, I bring a depth of training, knowledge, and experience to the work I do with couples and individuals. For the past 16+ years in private practice, my focus has been on helping people navigate complex relationship challenges, heal from unresolved trauma, and find clarity in times of uncertainty.
I am one of only six clinicians trained directly by Dr. William Doherty in the Discernment Counseling Residency Program at the Doherty Relationship Institute. Discernment Counseling is a specialized, short-term process for couples who are on the brink of divorce—when one partner is leaning toward leaving and the other partner hopes to save the marriage. My role is to help you slow down, help you gain an understanding of how each partner and the relationship are at the place where divorce is a possibility, and decide on the best next step with confidence and clarity.
Before private practice, I worked in renowned treatment centers such as The Meadows, Pine Grove, and Gentle Path, specializing in relationship issues, childhood and adulthood unresolved trauma, codependency, and sexual addiction. I have also trained alongside leading experts, including Dr. Patrick Carnes and Dr Stefanie Carnes, in the treatment of sexual addiction and betrayal trauma.
My approach is direct, compassionate, and supportive. I focus on identifying and addressing the root issues that keep you stuck so you can make meaningful changes in your relationships and your life. Whether you’re deciding the future of your marriage, working through deep emotional pain and trauma, I offer a safe and respectful space for healing and growth.
Outside of my work, I love spending time outdoors, traveling, practicing photography, meditation, and yoga. I’m happiest by the ocean surrounded by friends or family, and especially my old pup, Nala. I tend to keep things relaxed in sessions—so if you see me in joggers, a T-shirt, and a bun in my hair, know that you can come exactly as you are, too.
